Bill Walsh was a head coach for the San Francisco 49ers when they were a dynasty. Leading egos that big can be a challenge. He wrote the book “The Score Takes Care of Itself” detailing his methodology for leading a football team like the 49ers in the NFL.
Some of my favorite “quotes” (I don’t know if they are actual quotes from the book or my notes on said quotes):
- Have a high standard for knowledge and expertise. Learn to hate mistakes.
- Have a blue print for action: what should be done, why should it be done, and when should it be done.
- Be able to answer the question: What does it mean to be a captain?
- Winners act like winners (before they are winners)
- Teach your beliefs, values and philosophy
- Opportunity is in the eye of the beholder: make lemonade out of lemons!
- Success doesn’t care what road you take to get to its doorstep
- Sweat the right small stuff
- A pretty package can’t sell a poor product
- You are only as good as your good people
